- 1982 -1988 Industrial Design at University of Arts in Hamburg
Internships at Rosenthal, Iittala and WMF
- 1988 – 1996 Design Manager at Rosenthal AG in Selb, responsible for the porcelain development of all brands, inclusive hotel and cutlery development.
- 2001 -2010 Design Management and Consulting for Fürstenberg porcelain manufacture.
- 1997 – today: Founder of design studio Dörfel-Design, specializing in tabletop and hotel industry design worldwide
- 2017-2019 Visiting professor at University of Art and Design in Halle, in the department of Product Design and Design of Porcelain, Ceramics and Glass.
- 2020 - today: Founding of the WERKGUT www.werkgut.eu a place for arts, crafts and culture.
- 2021 - today: Building the Mikaela Dörfel Design brand www.doerfel-designshop.de
